Dysbiosis – A Hallmark of Aging
Dysbiosis is a term describing a microbial imbalance or maladaptation on or inside the body and can be defined as either the loss or gain of bacteria that promote health or disease. Gut dysbiosis in the elderly increases the risk of aging-associated diseases, as the composition of the gut microbiota changes with age, causing mild inflammation in the elderly. This change can be exacerbated by additional intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as uptake of antibiotics and diet. Age-related dysbiosis can further the progression of aging, inflammation and frailty, causing a negative impact on systemic health and longevity1.
